Jah Light Community Project is a community organisation established to provide affordable and accessible fitness and nutrition advice, support and training. The organisation is a Company Limited by Guarantee, with a Management Committee that includes members from different social and cultural backgrounds. We want to develop and encourage a better standard of living for people in deprived areas - creating opportunities for people to change their lives. Helping people choose a healthier lifestyle; to take kids off the street and give them the chance to improve their lifestyle.
The JLCP is black led with 90% of its management board and senior practitioners drawn from the African and Caribbean communities. The overwhelming focus of our work is with young people from these communities, though not exclusively, but do form the largest single ethnic group.
Our overarching aim is to raise the aspiration and mental health and wellbeing of young black men and women, especially those at the cusp of antisocial activities that could lead to criminality.
H3Future project will improve the health and wellbeing of young people who are at risk of exclusion and poor education outcomes arising from situations where they lack confidence and personal agency. Participants will be supported to build confidence, feel more positive and self-assured and so enable them to avoid being bullied or falling behind.
Young people today struggle to find things to do outside of school as we have seen many places such as youth clubs and sports centres close down in our local area this has only lead to an increase in the problem. The government has tried to curb the problem by introducing ASBO’s (Anti-social behaviour orders) these only meant that certain kids were given a brand of being "bad kids" and given conditions similar to those on electric monitoring. This is where Jah Light Community fits in. When you choose to live a dream, you need a plan to make it come true. Once you have a plan, a coach will help you stick to it and get around any obstacles.
To develop the personal, social and educational development of children and young people who lacks the skills and competence to take advantage of opportunities due to barriers of social exclusion delivered through a programme of physical and health related fitness.
1. To provide structured and formal support and development programmes delivered through physical and health related fitness opportunities
2. To implement personal and social education programmes which develop confidence and enhances personal development of those most disadvantaged and excluded from mainstream support processes.
3. To provide vocationally focused skills training opportunities that enable participants to fulfil and reach their potential by addressing barriers and challenges they are experiencing.
Life is full of opportunities, and it is our job to help you figure out which opportunities to take advantage of in order to live the life you want. We also want to combat Knife Crime within the community by giving young men and women more options In life to allow them to grow and become more than just a statistic. We will be running big buddy sessions in which they will be able to ask older members of the community for advice and support.
Utilising fitness and health in order to get young people involved in what we are offering is also gives us the ability to inform teenagers and young adults about the benefits and importance of exercise and healthy eating which in turn promotes a healthy lifestyle and gives them better options in life.
